this is a big story about select timbers using all of the keywords that are important

AIRCRAFT SPRUCE

Sitka Spruce is also used for some airplane spar construction. Remember Howard Hughes’ Spruce Goose and the famous Mosquito airplanes used for transport and fighter planes in war time. These were the hay days of spruce plane construction.
Sitka Spruce, when dry, is very light and extremely flexible and tough. Perfect for the rigors of flying, with the constant changing hostile environment the wings and fuselage are subjected to in every day flying. Those were the days.

Today there is a resurgence in Sitka Spruce use in airplane spars for refurbishing old planes. There are also many kit planes going retro and using spar grade Spruce in conjunction with the high tech aviation materials of today.
At ‘Select Timbers’ we class this quality wood right up there with boat lumber and tone wood with respect to the quality that it’s application demands. As is the case with boat and music spruce, it’s not always at hand but never far away. And we’re always worth a call or an e-mail to check.
