RED CEDAR

What can you say about western red cedar...
except that... it does it all!

It is elegant and beautiful and what it may lack in strength, it makes up for in functionality in almost every respect.

This wood is one of the most decay and bug resistant woods on earth. It can lay on the forest floor for hundreds & hundreds of years and then you salvage it,,, and miraculously the log is sound as a dollar! This of course is what makes it the obvious choice for extensive outdoor use.

You name it and in the “great outdoors“ the preferred choice for fencing, decking, roofing, siding, furniture and garden, is red cedar. But, let us not forget about the great insulating properties of the great wood combine this with its' light weight makes it a ringer for log home construction . These properities also make it the obvious choice in door and window frame construction as well. Simply put it can be viewed as the most incredible natural weather resistance material of the modern world.

Western red cedar is also required material in an array of boat construction. It is used for canoes, kayaks, row boats, sailboats and work boats. If you don’t believe it’s tough enough , then just ask the world renown wood boat builder Frank Prothero who felt that there was no better wood. He even built wood tug boats made from red cedar, he just used thicker boards.
The roots of Prothero’s beliefs perhaps began with the coastal natives… who used red cedar for everything from dugout canoes to shelter and clothing and foodware to ceremonial masks and totem poles. There is no better tribute to man and cedar that the many totem poles still standing up and down our coast line.
